Sigma BF Review: A Minimalist Camera that Delivers Stunning Photos

Sigma's latest camera, the BF, is a bold departure from the norm, stripping away features to focus on simplicity and photography. This $2,000 camera may seem lacking in some areas, but it makes up for it with its stunning design, clever controls, and ability to produce incredible photos.

The BF's minimalist approach means it's missing some key features, including a tilt or flip-out screen, hot shoe or cold shoe, viewfinder, mechanical shutter, 4K 60, microphone port, and in-body stabilization. Even the link to connect a shoulder strap is absent. However, after using the camera for a few weeks, reviewer Vjeran Pavic found that its bold design, clever controls, clean software, and stunning photo quality won him over.

The camera's body is made from a single block of aluminum, with pared-down controls that make it surprisingly easy to operate. The result is a high-end point-and-shoot camera that delivers incredible results without overthinking it. While it may not be suitable for professional work or video recording, it excels as a photography-focused camera.

The camera's design is both minimalist and bold, with sharp corners and edges that make it stand out. While it may not be the most comfortable camera to hold, it's not uncomfortable to the point of being unusable. The grippy surface on the front of the camera helps with ergonomics, and the lack of a second strap link is a minor inconvenience.

The BF's interface is simple and speedy, with a single dial on the back that lets you easily cycle through settings and change them on the fly. The dial also doubles as an exposure compensation control when half-pressing the shutter button, making it a clever and genuinely useful feature. The camera's other buttons also have neat tricks, such as the playback key that shows your last photo taken until you lift your finger again.

The camera's 3.2-inch screen is large, bright, and reasonably sharp, making it easy to review photos. The internal 230GB SSD storage is a concern, as it means you'll need to be diligent about backing up photos and managing storage space. However, the photos themselves are stunning, with sharp, lively, and detailed images that showcase the camera's capabilities.

The camera's auto-focus system is impressive, with snappy performance, decent focus tracking, and excellent face and animal detection. Video recording is available up to 6K at 30FPS, but it's clear that photography is the camera's main focus. The lack of a tilt screen, weak battery life, and no optical stabilization make it less suitable for video recording.

Despite its limitations, the Sigma BF is a camera that will leave a lasting impression in the photography world. Its dedication to simplicity and photography-focused design make it a unique and exciting choice for those looking for a camera that delivers stunning photos. While it may not be for everyone, it's certainly a camera that will win hearts.
