As the world increasingly relies on AI chatbots like ChatGPT for online searches, companies are recognizing the need to adapt their online presence to cater to these AI-driven interactions. Scrunch AI, a startup founded in 2023, is at the forefront of this shift, providing enterprises with a platform to audit, optimize, and gain visibility into how AI search platforms and crawlers interact with their online information.
The company's system, which updates every three days, enables businesses to monitor how their information is presented in AI search results, identify information gaps, and rectify inaccuracies. For instance, Scrunch AI can help companies detect if an AI search engine is sourcing outdated pricing information from their website, allowing them to update or remove the outdated section to improve search results.
Chris Andrew, co-founder and CEO of Scrunch AI, was inspired to create the platform after noticing a change in his own online behavior. "I realized I was visiting fewer websites," Andrew explained. "I was expecting an answer from ChatGPT instead of 20 links from Google. And so I thought the first thing that's being outsourced at scale to AI agents and crawlers is browsing." This epiphany led Andrew to validate his idea with CMOs, who were already experiencing high-quality referral traffic from AI search engines, but struggling with inconsistent results across different platforms.
Scrunch AI's platform addresses this issue by providing companies with monitoring and visibility into how AI search engines and crawlers interact with their online presence. The startup has already signed 25 customers, including prominent enterprises like Lenovo and BairesDev, as well as Penn State University. This traction has attracted investors, with Scrunch AI recently securing a $4 million seed round led by Mayfield, alongside several angel investors, including Clara Shih, TJ Parker, and Bryant Chou.
The company plans to utilize the funding to continue building and refining its product. While Scrunch AI is not the only player in this space, Andrew believes his startup stands out due to its focus on the customer journey, rather than just initial search results. Moreover, Scrunch AI is taking a more comprehensive approach by considering searches performed by AI agents, not just human users.
The market for AI search optimization is still in its early stages, but it has significant potential for growth. Other companies, such as Profound, are also exploring this opportunity, and traditional marketing and PR agencies like Avenue Z are beginning to offer AI search optimization services. As AI-driven search continues to gain traction, Scrunch AI is well-positioned to help enterprises navigate this new landscape and ensure accurate brand representation in the AI era.
With its innovative approach and growing customer base, Scrunch AI is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of online interactions between humans and AI agents. As Andrew aptly put it, "Your program is no longer what you say it is. It's what you say it is, plus third parties, plus competitive sites. You're going to want to have monitoring and visibility against that, at scale." Scrunch AI is committed to providing enterprises with the tools and insights necessary to thrive in this new era of AI-driven search.
