Samsung Display has stolen the spotlight at Mobile World Congress 2025 with its innovative folding screen concepts, including a briefcase screen and a foldable gaming handheld. The display manufacturer's creations are not just mere prototypes, but rather demonstrations of what its screens could achieve in the hands of other manufacturers.
The briefcase screen, which resembles LG's briefcase TV, is a particularly intriguing concept. Although its exact usage is unclear, with questions surrounding how it would be propped up or stored, the design's sheer cool factor has generated significant buzz among MWC attendees. Unfortunately, the screen was not available for hands-on interaction, with even Samsung representatives unable to touch it.
The foldable gaming handheld, on the other hand, was a crowd favorite. This Switch-style device opens fully flat and folds in half for storage, boasting a compact and portable design. Its vibrant colors and sleek aesthetic make it hard to resist, and it's easy to imagine gamers clamoring for such a product. While it's uncertain when or if this concept will become a reality, Samsung's demonstration has undoubtedly sparked excitement in the gaming community.
Another attention-grabbing concept on display was the asymmetrical Z Flip-style phone, affectionately dubbed "The Claw." This unique design features two hinges, leaving part of the inner screen visible when closed. Although it's unclear how practical this design would be in everyday use, with concerns about debris affecting the inner screen, the two-tone finish and innovative approach make it a standout.
Samsung Display's booth also showcased an assortment of other examples and concepts, some of which were previously seen at CES. The company's willingness to experiment with various screen designs, including stretchable, bendable, and flexible options, is a testament to its commitment to innovation.
While these concepts may not be immediately available to consumers, they demonstrate Samsung Display's capabilities and potential for future collaborations with manufacturers. As the technology industry continues to evolve, it will be exciting to see how these innovative designs shape the future of mobile devices and beyond.
In a year filled with exciting developments at MWC 2025, Samsung Display's folding screen concepts have undoubtedly stolen the show. As the tech world looks to the future, one thing is clear: Samsung is pushing the boundaries of what is possible with screen technology.
