Rwanda and Belgium Sever Diplomatic Ties Over Congo Conflict

Rwanda and Belgium have taken the drastic step of severing diplomatic relations, with each country expelling the other's diplomats, in a dramatic escalation of tensions over their involvement in the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The move comes after Rwanda accused Belgium of sustaining "neocolonial delusions" and undermining its efforts in the region, particularly in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Rwanda's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation stated that Belgium has a long history of undermining Rwanda, both before and during the ongoing conflict.

In a strongly worded statement, Rwanda accused Belgium of playing a significant and harmful role in the region, particularly in actions perceived as being against Rwanda. The statement alleged that Belgium has been mobilizing against Rwanda in different forums, using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilize both Rwanda and the region.

In response, Belgium's Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, called Rwanda's decision "disproportionate," stating that it reflects Kigali's reluctance to engage in dialogue when faced with disagreements. Brussels will expel Rwandan diplomats by declaring them persona non grata.

The diplomatic fallout is the latest development in the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where Rwanda faces accusations of backing the M23 rebel offensive. Rwanda has denied these claims, further fueling tensions in the region. African leaders continue efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire in the region, but the diplomatic rift between Rwanda and Belgium is likely to complicate these efforts.

The move is significant, as it marks a rare instance of two countries severing diplomatic relations over a specific conflict. The implications of this move are far-reaching, with potential consequences for regional stability and international relations.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this diplomatic rift will impact the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the broader region. One thing is certain, however: the expulsion of diplomats and severing of diplomatic relations is a dramatic escalation of tensions, and a worrying development for regional stability.
