Rwanda and Belgium have taken the drastic step of severing diplomatic relations, with each country expelling the other's diplomats, amid escalating tensions over their involvement in the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
The move comes after Rwanda accused Belgium of sustaining "neocolonial delusions" and undermining Rwanda in the ongoing conflict in the DRC. In a statement, Rwanda's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation claimed that Belgium has a long history of undermining Rwanda, both before and during the ongoing conflict.
According to the statement, Belgium has played a significant and harmful role in the region, particularly in actions perceived as being against Rwanda. The post accused Belgium of using lies and manipulation to secure an unjustified hostile opinion of Rwanda, in an attempt to destabilize both Rwanda and the region.
In response, Belgium's Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, called Rwanda's decision "disproportionate," stating that it reflects Kigali's reluctance to engage in dialogue when faced with disagreements. Brussels has subsequently expelled Rwandan diplomats by declaring them persona non grata.
The diplomatic fallout is the latest development in the ongoing conflict in the eastern DRC, where Rwanda faces accusations of backing the M23 rebel offensive. Rwanda has denied these claims, further fueling tensions in the region. African leaders continue efforts to broker a lasting ceasefire in the region, but the diplomatic rift between Rwanda and Belgium is likely to complicate these efforts.
The severing of diplomatic relations between Rwanda and Belgium has significant implications for regional stability and cooperation. The move is likely to further polarize the region, making it more challenging to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. It also raises concerns about the potential for further escalation and the impact on civilians in the region.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the international community will respond to the diplomatic crisis. However, one thing is clear: the severing of diplomatic relations between Rwanda and Belgium is a significant setback for regional cooperation and stability, and it will require concerted efforts from all parties involved to find a way forward.
In the meantime, the people of the DRC and the wider region will continue to bear the brunt of the conflict, and it is imperative that all parties prioritize a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
