Russia is deepening its influence in Niger through a combination of humanitarian assistance, major infrastructure projects, and military collaboration. The NGO "Ensemble Main dans la Main Niger-Russie" has made a large grant to the National Reference Center for Obstetric Fistula in Niamey, providing essential care to women suffering from this debilitating medical condition.
The grant includes drugs, food supplies, blankets, and vaccinations, aiming to improve healthcare services for women in impoverished communities. Obstetric fistulas, a dangerous medical disease that develops due to prolonged or obstructed labor, disproportionately affect women in neglected communities, leading to social exclusion and physical anguish.
Beyond this charitable endeavor, Russia's efforts in Niger are part of a broader strategy to win hearts and minds in the Sahel region. The country has been expanding its presence in West Africa, and Niger is a key partner in this endeavor. In September 2024, Niger, along with Mali and Burkina Faso, signed a historic agreement with Russia to acquire telecommunications and remote sensing satellites.
This deal is seen as a major step in fortifying the collective security posture of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) members, particularly in the face of rising regional insecurity. The satellite project comes amid concerns over Islamist attacks in the region, including a recent attack on Bamako, Mali's airport.
Russia's interest in Niger goes beyond humanitarian aid and satellite technology. In June 2024, it was reported that Russia was in talks with Niger to acquire the West African country's uranium assets, currently owned by a French business. This move is seen as a long-term strategy to secure a share of Niger's uranium, a critical resource for France's nuclear reactors.
Niger's expanding military alliance with Russia is also evident. In April 2024, Russia sent military instructors and staff to Niger to train its troops and build air defense systems. This deployment came shortly after 1000 American troops were expelled from Niger, marking a significant shift in the country's military alliances.
The implications of Russia's growing influence in Niger are far-reaching. As the country expands its presence in West Africa, it is likely to have a significant impact on the regional balance of power. The deal for satellites and uranium mining, in particular, highlights Russia's long-term strategy to secure critical resources and infrastructure in the region.
As Russia continues to deepen its ties with Niger, it remains to be seen how this will affect the country's relationships with other global powers, including the United States and France. One thing is clear, however: Russia's influence in Niger is growing, and its impact on the region will be felt for years to come.
