Russia Strengthens African Ties with 19% Surge in Agricultural Exports

Russia has significantly boosted its agricultural exports to Africa, with a 19% increase to over $7 billion in 2024, according to a statement released by the state center Agroexport. This surge in trade marks a strengthening of ties between Russia and Africa, with Egypt, Algeria, and Libya emerging as major beneficiaries.

The increased exports are a result of Russia's efforts to expand its presence in the African market. The country has been actively pursuing trade agreements and partnerships with various African nations, with a focus on agricultural products. In 2024, Russian agricultural exports to Africa exceeded $7 billion, with 45 countries on the continent receiving domestic food products.

Egypt, in particular, has emerged as a significant trade partner for Russia. The North African country imported 21% more Russian agricultural exports by the end of 2024, with wheat being a major component of these exports. Egypt is a leading importer of Russian wheat, and also sources sunflower and soybean oil, legumes, flax seeds, molasses, yeast, and various other goods from Russia.

Other African countries, such as Algeria and Libya, have also increased their imports of Russian agricultural products. Grains, wheat, barley, and corn accounted for 87% of the overall value of Russian agricultural exports to Africa, while African countries are significant consumers of Russian oils and fats, meat, and seafood. Dairy product shipments also grew considerably in 2024.

Igor Pavensky, head of agricultural market analysis at "Rusagrotrans," noted that Africa is expanding its proportion of Russian wheat exports. In the 2023/2024 season, 21.2 million tonnes of wheat were exported to African countries, accounting for 38% of Russia's total wheat exports and setting a record high. Currently, Africa constitutes 50% of the Russian wheat market, a trend that is likely to continue on an upward trajectory.

Russia's increasing influence in Africa is not limited to trade. The country has also been forming military alliances with several African nations, which have rejected Western partnerships. This growing presence on the continent is likely to have significant implications for global politics and trade.

The surge in agricultural exports is a significant development in Russia's efforts to expand its global influence. As the country continues to strengthen its ties with Africa, it is likely to have a profound impact on the global economy and international relations.
