Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has officially opened its Joshua Tree outpost, a revolutionary charging station that redefines the EV charging experience. Located just six miles from the national park entrance, this outpost is the second in Rivian's chain of charging stations, following the first one in Yosemite, California.
The Joshua Tree outpost boasts 12 900-volt 300kW CCS chargers, open to all EVs, although Teslas require an adapter. The station is designed to cater to a wide range of users, including those with trailers, with a pull-through spot available. Rivian owners can pay through the app or tap their credit cards at the charger at 46 cents per kWh, while non-Rivian cars can tap their cards and pay 60 cents per kWh.
What sets Rivian's outpost apart is its commitment to sustainability. The company has partnered with Emrgy, an Atlanta-based startup, to provide continuous renewable energy without damming up rivers and creeks. This innovative approach ensures that the energy delivered to the chargers is matched with the purchase of energy derived from solar, wind, and non-dam hydropower.
The outpost offers an unparalleled charging experience, with amenities that go beyond the standard gas station fare. Upon entry, visitors are greeted with a cozy conversation pit, complete with Jenga and coffee table books. Local products are available for sale, along with free coffee provided by Joshua Tree Coffee Company. Snacks and drinks are also available, featuring organic and gourmet options like roasted garlic Spanish white anchovies and pesto.
The outpost also features a deck with lovely landscaping, a play area for both adults and kids, and a four-foot-high boulder with rock climbing holds for children. The deck offers a stunning view of the Mojave Desert, complete with chollas and Joshua trees. Visitors can even test-drive a Rivian or attend educational classes and seminars at the on-site Adventure Lab.
While the outpost is not located in the heart of Joshua Tree's hippy-dippy, desert-chic vibe, it marks a significant milestone for the town, which relies heavily on tourism. Until now, charging options in Joshua Tree were limited, with only a Tesla Supercharger station and GM's recently installed chargers available in nearby Yucca Valley. Rivian's outpost is the first charging station in Joshua Tree proper, making it a welcome addition to the community.
The outpost's impact will be felt beyond Joshua Tree, as Rivian plans to open locations in Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York. This expansion will make off-roading in Rivians much easier, particularly in areas like Joshua Tree, which offers acres of open desert and off-road trails in the national park.
In conclusion, Rivian's Joshua Tree outpost sets a new standard for EV charging, offering a unique blend of sustainability, convenience, and luxury. As the company continues to expand its network of charging stations, it's clear that the future of electric vehicle ownership is looking brighter than ever.
