Reddit has officially launched Reddit Answers, a new AI-powered search tool designed to help users find information on the platform more efficiently. This innovative feature responds to queries by generating well-formatted responses and providing links to their sources, all sourced directly from Reddit.
The distinction between Reddit Answers and other AI search products lies in its ability to tap into Reddit's vast repository of user-generated content. This could potentially allow users to bypass Google and get information directly from the source. Reddit has been cracking down on where users can search for Reddit content, and Google is currently the only major search engine that displays recent Reddit results. By introducing Reddit Answers, the platform may be able to redirect users to search on its own site, rather than relying on external search engines.
Initially, Reddit Answers will be available to a limited number of users in the US and in English, accessible on the web and iOS devices. The company is working on an Android version, with plans to expand the tool to more languages and locations in the future. In an interview, Reddit's VP of product, Serkan Piantino, confirmed that the platform is committed to rolling out the feature more widely.
A test version of Reddit Answers was made available to the author, who reported a positive user experience. The tool features a prominent search box, accompanied by suggested searches that users can click on. Upon selecting a query, Reddit Answers quickly generates a list of relevant results, complete with bulleted suggestions and hyperlinks to the original posts. A sidebar feature allows users to view the exact source of the information, adding an extra layer of transparency.
In comparison, a standard Google search for the same query yields a lengthy list of links, lacking the summaries and bullet points provided by Reddit Answers. While some users may prefer the more traditional search results, Reddit Answers offers a more streamlined and informative experience. However, it's worth noting that AI summaries can sometimes contain errors, which may impact the tool's reliability.
One of the key advantages of Reddit Answers is its ability to pick up on trending topics and discussions on the platform within minutes. According to Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt, this feature enables users to access timely results. However, in the author's testing, the tool struggled to provide up-to-the-minute information, instead returning results from earlier events. This may be due to the product still being in its testing phase.
In its current form, Reddit Answers appears to be more effective as a jumping-off point for exploring broader topics on Reddit, rather than a real-time search tool. While the feature shows promise, it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to change user habits and shift searches away from Google.
The launch of Reddit Answers marks an interesting development in the tech industry, as platforms increasingly focus on providing more integrated and user-friendly search experiences. As AI technology continues to evolve, it will be fascinating to see how Reddit Answers adapts and improves, potentially reshaping the way we interact with online information.
