Raspberry AI's founder, Cheryl Liu, spotted an opportunity to apply generative AI to fashion design after the release of image models like Open AI's DALL-E and Stability AI's stable diffusion in late 2022. Liu, a former private equity analyst at KKR and veteran of Amazon and DoorDash, recognized the potential for AI to transform the design process, which traditionally relied on physical samples or older computer-aided design tools.

With Raspberry AI's platform, designers can turn their sketches into photorealistic images that accurately represent how the product would appear on a brand's website. This capability has proven invaluable for brands, allowing them to decide whether to manufacture a product without incurring the costs and time associated with physical samples. According to Liu, "You can see the same foundational piece in a lot of different materials and prints... No company is going to order 50 different sample iterations for one single product, but now they can see 50 different iterations of a single design."

Raspberry AI's innovative solution has quickly gained traction with top fashion brands, including Under Armour, Groupo Teddy, and luxury designer MCM Worldwide. The startup now counts 70 customers, a testament to the platform's ability to accelerate the design process and improve decision-making.

The company's impressive growth has attracted significant investment, with Raspberry AI raising $24 million in a Series A funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from existing investors Greycroft, Correlation Ventures, and MVP Ventures. This funding comes just 10 months after the startup's $4.5 million round, demonstrating the confidence investors have in Raspberry AI's technology and vision.

Andreessen Horowitz partner Bryan Kim cited the startup's ability to accelerate the fashion manufacturing process and its impressive roster of clients as key factors in their decision to invest. "We had met with multiple companies and got excited about Cheryl as a founder and how she approaches building a company," Kim said.

Raspberry AI's platform differentiates itself from other AI image generators like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Adobe Firefly through its ability to understand and accurately interpret industry-specific terminology. Liu highlighted the example of the "fuzzy sweater," noting that Raspberry AI's platform can capture the nuances of design-specific terminology that other solutions may not.

In addition to its industry-specific understanding, Raspberry AI's platform offers designers the ability to create images from sketches, further streamlining the design process. With its latest funding, the company plans to expand its engineering, sales, and marketing teams and explore new product categories, including home, furniture, and cosmetics design.
