Hammad Syed and Mahmoud Felfel, co-founders of PlayAI, have made significant strides in the development of AI-powered voice cloning and text-to-speech technology since their initial Chrome extension in 2016. The duo's company, formerly known as PlayHT, has evolved into a comprehensive platform offering customers a range of predefined voices, voice cloning capabilities, and an API for seamless integration into applications.
The company's "voice interface of AI" allows users to adjust the intonation, cadence, and tenor of voices, creating a highly realistic audio experience. Additionally, PlayAI offers a "playground" for users to upload files and generate read-aloud versions, as well as a dashboard for crafting polished audio narrations and voiceovers. The startup has also ventured into the realm of "AI agents," providing tools to automate tasks such as customer call answering.
One of PlayAI's most intriguing experiments is PlayNote, a feature that transforms various file formats, including PDFs, videos, and photos, into podcast-style shows, read-aloud summaries, debates, and even children's stories. This innovative tool generates a script from an uploaded file or URL, leveraging a collection of AI models to craft the finished product. While the results are impressive, the technology is not without its limitations, occasionally producing odd artifacts and hallucinations.
PlayAI's latest model, PlayDialog, enables the generation of conversation-like speech with natural delivery and tone. The company claims to have implemented robust ethical safeguards, including automatic detection and blocking of offensive content. However, testing revealed some concerns regarding the effectiveness of these safeguards, and the company's approach to training its voice-cloning AI remains somewhat murky.
PlayAI faces criticism from actors who fear that voice work will be replaced by AI-generated vocals, and that they will have little control over how their digital doubles are used. The startup's terms of service suggest that it won't take responsibility for users if they face legal threats. Despite these challenges, PlayAI has secured a $20 million seed round led by Kindred Ventures, with participation from Race Capital and 500 Global, bringing its total capital raised to $21 million.
The funding will be used to invest in PlayAI's generative AI voice models and voice agent platform, aiming to shorten the time for businesses to build human-quality speech experiences. The company plans to expand its 40-person workforce, further solidifying its position in the competitive voice cloning and AI dubbing market, which includes players like ElevenLabs, Papercup, Deepdub, Acapela, Respeecher, and Voice.ai, as well as tech giants Amazon, Microsoft, and Google.
As PlayAI continues to advance its technology, it will be crucial for the company to address concerns around safety, ethics, and the potential legal implications of its voice cloning capabilities. With its latest funding round, PlayAI is poised to make significant strides in the development of AI-powered voice technology, but it must do so in a responsible and transparent manner.
