Peloton has officially launched Strength Plus, a standalone audio-based strength training app, after a limited beta program earlier in September. The app, which will cost $10 a month, allows users to generate custom workouts based on their preferences, including workout length, equipment, experience level, and targeted muscle groups.
The Strength Plus app is designed to provide users with a more personalized and flexible strength training experience. It includes multi-week programs curated by Peloton's strength coaches, as well as audio cues and tips from instructors. Additionally, the app features a library of instructional videos demonstrating exercises and equipment setup, allowing users to learn and improve at their own pace.
One of the key differentiators of Strength Plus is its integration with the Apple Watch, enabling users to log weights and reps within the app. Furthermore, users can listen to their own music, audiobooks, or podcasts while working out, a departure from Peloton's typical classes that feature instructor-curated workout music.
This move marks Peloton's latest attempt to capitalize on strength training, which has been the company's second most popular exercise type. Despite its efforts, Peloton has struggled to make a significant impact in the strength training market. In 2022, the company launched its Guide strength training hardware, but it failed to gain traction. The revamped Peloton app also included Peloton Gym workouts, but these were limited in scope and functionality.
Strength Plus bears similarities to other apps, such as Ladder, which has already responded to Peloton's launch with a tongue-in-cheek ad campaign. However, Peloton's app leverages its well-known instructors, potentially giving it an edge in the market. The launch of Strength Plus can be seen as an attempt by Peloton to expand its appeal beyond home workouts, an area where the company has struggled to maintain momentum since the lifting of COVID-19 lockdowns.
Existing Peloton All Access, Guide, and App Plus members will have access to the Strength Plus app for free. For new users, Peloton is offering a limited-time promotional subscription of $1 per month for the first six months, after which the price will increase to $9.99 per month. Currently, the app is only available on iOS, with Peloton remaining tight-lipped about its plans for an Android release.
The launch of Strength Plus marks a significant development in Peloton's strategy to diversify its offerings and appeal to a broader range of users. As the company continues to navigate the competitive fitness landscape, the success of Strength Plus will be closely watched by industry observers and investors alike.
