NBC's beloved supernatural drama Grimm is getting a new lease on life as a feature-length film, courtesy of Peacock. According to Variety, the streaming platform has greenlit a reboot movie based on the 2011 series, with original showrunners Stephen Carpenter, Jim Kouf, and David Greenwalt set to executive produce.
The new film will be written by Josh Berman, who is also attached to co-executive produce alongside Kouf and Greenwalt. While details about the movie's plot are still under wraps, the project marks a significant revival of the Grimm franchise, which originally ran for six seasons on NBC from 2011 to 2017.
For fans of the show, the news is a welcome surprise, especially given that NBC has previously explored reviving the IP without success. The original series followed Detective Nick Burkhardt, a Portland cop who discovers he's a Grimm, a descendant of a line of hunters tasked with defending humanity from supernatural creatures. The show developed a loyal fan base during its run, thanks to its unique blend of police procedural and monster-of-the-week storytelling.
It's unclear at this point whether any original cast members, including David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, and Silas Weir Mitchell, will return for the reboot film. However, with the original creative team on board, there's a strong possibility that some familiar faces may make an appearance. Peacock has yet to announce a release date or further details about the project, but the news is sure to generate buzz among fans of the original series.
The revival of Grimm as a feature-length film is also a strategic move for Peacock, which is looking to capitalize on the current resurgence of interest in monster movies and TV shows. With the success of recent films like Nosferatu and Wolf Man, it's clear that audiences are hungry for more supernatural thrills and chills. By reviving a beloved franchise like Grimm, Peacock is poised to tap into this trend and attract new viewers to its platform.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Peacock's Grimm reboot film performs and whether it will pave the way for more revivals of classic TV shows. One thing is certain, however: with the original creative team on board, this new take on Grimm is sure to be a wild ride for fans of the original series and newcomers alike.
