Oracle and Microsoft in Talks to Take Over TikTok's Global Operations

Oracle and Microsoft are in talks to take over TikTok's global operations, according to a report by NPR. The deal, which is being negotiated by the White House, would see ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, retain a minority stake in the app. Oracle would be responsible for overseeing TikTok's algorithm, data collection, and software updates, effectively giving the company control over the app's backbone.

The deal is seen as an attempt to minimize Chinese ownership of the popular social media app, which has been a point of contention for the US government. Oracle's server network already provides the bulk of TikTok's infrastructure, making it a natural fit to take on a more significant role in the app's operations.

Microsoft's involvement in the deal is less clear, with the company reportedly engaged in talks but the extent of its participation unknown. This is not the first time Microsoft has been involved in talks to acquire TikTok, with the company previously bidding on the app alongside Oracle and Walmart in 2020. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates had referred to the deal as a "poisoned chalice" at the time.

Walmart, which was part of the previous bid, is not involved in the current talks, reportedly due to concerns over the estimated price of the app. The news of the deal comes on the heels of President Trump's executive order giving TikTok a 75-day reprieve from any enforcement action related to the US requirement that ByteDance divest from the app.

Trump had previously floated the idea of a "joint venture" in which the US would own 50% of TikTok, but this deal would appear to be a more significant shift in ownership and control. The implications of this deal are far-reaching, with potential consequences for the future of social media and the balance of power between the US and China in the tech industry.

As the deal continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this will impact TikTok's users and the broader tech landscape. One thing is certain, however: the fate of TikTok hangs in the balance, and the outcome of these negotiations will have significant repercussions for years to come.
