OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research organization, has announced plans to integrate its AI video generation tool Sora directly into its popular consumer chatbot app ChatGPT. This move aims to expand the capabilities of both products and broaden their appeal to a wider range of users.
Currently, Sora is only available through a dedicated web app launched in December, which allows users to generate up to twenty-second-long cinematic clips using the AI video model. However, OpenAI's product lead for Sora, Rohan Sahai, revealed during a Friday office hours session on Discord that the company is working on making Sora accessible within ChatGPT, marrying the two products.
The integration of Sora into ChatGPT could have significant implications for the chatbot app's users. By allowing users to generate Sora videos from within the chatbot, OpenAI may be able to attract more users to ChatGPT and incentivize them to upgrade to the app's premium subscription tiers, which may offer higher video generation limits.
Sahai explained that one of the reasons OpenAI launched Sora as a separate web app was to maintain ChatGPT's simplicity. However, the company is now working on expanding Sora's capabilities and integrating it into ChatGPT to provide a more comprehensive experience for users.
In addition to integrating Sora into ChatGPT, OpenAI is also working on expanding Sora's generation capabilities to images. Sahai confirmed rumors of an AI image generator powered by Sora, which could potentially let users create photos that are more photorealistic. This would complement ChatGPT's existing image generation capabilities, powered by OpenAI's DALL-E 3 model.
Furthermore, OpenAI is working on a new version of Sora Turbo, the model that currently powers the Sora web app. This update could potentially enhance the quality and capabilities of Sora-generated videos and images.
The company is also exploring the possibility of creating a standalone mobile app for Sora, with Sahai noting that the Sora team is actively looking for mobile engineers. This could further expand the reach and accessibility of Sora's AI video generation capabilities.
Overall, OpenAI's plans to integrate Sora into ChatGPT and expand its capabilities to images demonstrate the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI-generated content. As the technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how users and creators leverage these tools to produce innovative and engaging content.
