Danish startup NitroVolt has secured €2.75 million in seed funding to revolutionize the production of ammonia, a crucial fertilizer in agriculture. The company's device uses electricity and air to produce ammonia, offering a sustainable alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process, which relies heavily on natural gas.
NitroVolt's innovative approach has already gained traction, with greenhouse grower Koppert Cress in the Netherlands agreeing to test the system. The startup's device will not only produce ammonia for fertilizer but also generate heat to warm the greenhouses, making it a perfect fit for environmentally conscious growers like Koppert Cress, which aims to eliminate carbon emissions by 2026.
The startup's pilot unit will produce 5 kilograms of ammonia per day, with plans to scale up to 150 kilograms per day, enough to supply a typical farm in Denmark and the US. With the ability to produce ammonia at a cost comparable to traditional methods, NitroVolt is poised to disrupt the fertilizer industry and help farmers transition to more sustainable practices.
The seed round was led by BackingMinds and EIFO, the Danish sovereign wealth fund, with participation from Breakthrough Energy Fellows, Division Q, EQT Foundation, and Satgana. The funding will be used to build the pilot and hire staff to drive the project forward.
NitroVolt's technology has the potential to make a significant impact on the environment, particularly in regions where ammonia is scarce and logistics costs are high. As the startup continues to grow and expand, it's likely to play a key role in shaping the future of sustainable agriculture.
