The energy crisis in Nigeria has reached a critical point, with over 175 million people lacking access to clean cooking energy, according to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics. The country's energy sector has experienced significant changes in the last year, with the cost of fuel and diesel increasing dramatically, forcing residents to seek alternative energy sources.
A recent survey, the 2024 Nigeria Residential Energy Demand-Side Survey (NREDSS), has revealed the top 5 most used energy sources in Nigerian households. Electricity tops the list, with 58% of households connected to the national grid, followed by fuel wood, charcoal, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and residues and garbage plastics.
The survey, which interviewed 7,706 households across nine states, found that 67.8% of households use fuel wood, while 21.6% use charcoal. The average monthly power cost for households was ₦4,155.8, with LPG users spending an average of ₦10,239.7 per month.
These findings have significant implications for startups and entrepreneurs in the energy sector, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to address Nigeria's energy crisis. With the government struggling to provide reliable electricity, there is a huge opportunity for startups to develop alternative energy sources and technologies that can meet the growing demand for energy in the country.
The survey's results also underscore the need for sustainable energy solutions, as the reliance on fuel wood and charcoal has severe environmental and health consequences. Startups and entrepreneurs can play a crucial role in developing clean energy solutions that can help mitigate these effects and provide a sustainable future for Nigeria's energy sector.
