Nigerian lawmaker Philip Agbese has given Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan an ultimatum to provide evidence of $150 million bribery allegations or face legal action. Agbese, a member of the House of Representatives, has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged bribery case related to Binance.
The controversy began when Gambaryan claimed that three Nigerian lawmakers, including Agbese and Peter Akpanke, demanded a $150 million bribe in cryptocurrency payment into their wallets. However, Gambaryan failed to provide any documentary evidence to support his claims.
In a statement, Agbese challenged Gambaryan to either present evidence of his involvement or publicly apologize within seven days, warning that failure to do so would result in legal action. Agbese emphasized that he has never engaged in cryptocurrency trading, nor does he own a crypto wallet, making any claims of bribery involving him baseless.
Agbese clarified that he was not a member of the Committee on Economic and Financial Crimes and only visited his colleague, Hon. Peter Ankpanke, where he briefly discussed Binance's activities in the presence of Hon. Peter Anekwe. He stated that he made no demands and was unaware of any further interactions between the committee and Binance executives after his departure.
The allegations made by Gambaryan have sparked controversy in Nigeria, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the country's political landscape. The incident has also raised concerns about the potential risks and challenges associated with cryptocurrency transactions in Nigeria.
The development comes amid growing scrutiny of Binance's activities in Nigeria, with reports of the company's executives being detained in the country. The incident has highlighted the need for greater regulatory oversight of cryptocurrency transactions in Nigeria and the importance of ensuring that companies operating in the country adhere to ethical standards.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Gambaryan will provide evidence to support his claims or apologize for the allegations. The outcome of this controversy will have significant implications for the reputation of Binance and the cryptocurrency industry as a whole in Nigeria.
In the meantime, Agbese's demand for evidence has sparked a heated debate about the need for transparency and accountability in Nigeria's political landscape. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring that companies operating in the country adhere to ethical standards and that allegations of wrongdoing are thoroughly investigated.
