Steppin, a pioneering iOS app, has launched to bridge the gap between physical and mental health by combining fitness tracking with social media management. This innovative app blocks access to social media platforms unless users meet their daily step goals, encouraging individuals to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The brainchild of Paul English, co-founder of travel search engine Kayak, which was acquired by Priceline for $1.8 billion, Steppin was conceived during a family vacation in Spain. English, along with his son Michael and fiancè Rachel Cohen, realized that despite being surrounded by beautiful scenery, they were constantly glued to their phones, scrolling through social media. This epiphany led them to develop an app that ties social media usage to physical activity, promoting both physical and mental well-being.
Steppin allows users to set their own daily step goals, which, when achieved, unlock access to their favorite social media platforms, such as TikTok and Instagram. The app's flexibility enables users to customize their experience, deciding how many steps are required to earn one minute of screen time. Additionally, users can override Steppin's controls if needed, and the app also integrates with other time-consuming apps like Netflix and certain games.
While initially marketed towards Gen Z, Paul English believes Steppin's benefits extend to people of all ages. He has personally used the app to reduce his own social media usage, and has received interest from parents and adults alike who recognize the value of balancing their online presence with physical activity.
Currently available for free, Steppin plans to transition to an annual subscription model in the future, with an expected price point of around $20. The app's future development roadmap includes the integration of additional physical activities, such as yoga classes, to earn social media time, as well as a leaderboard to track friends' progress and a feature to monitor consecutive days of successful app usage.
Steppin is now available for download on iOS, with an Android release slated for the coming weeks. As the app gains traction, it will be interesting to see how users respond to this novel approach to managing screen time and promoting physical activity.
In a world where screen time is increasingly recognized as a significant health concern, Steppin's innovative approach offers a promising solution. By combining fitness tracking with social media management, the app has the potential to inspire a healthier, more balanced lifestyle for users of all ages.
