Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, newly appointed co-leads of President-elect Donald Trump's "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE), have revealed their strategy to significantly downsize the federal government. In a recent Wall Street Journal article, the duo outlined their approach, which includes recommending executive actions to cut thousands of federal regulations and reduce government headcount.
Musk and Ramaswamy plan to achieve this by leveraging two recent Supreme Court rulings, which they believe grant the President the authority to pause and review regulations enacted by unelected bureaucrats. They will work with legal experts and utilize "advanced technology" to identify regulations that exceed congressional authority, presenting their findings to President Trump for executive action.
The consequences of their plan could be far-reaching, with potential "mass head-count reductions" across government agencies. Additionally, Musk and Ramaswamy suggest imposing rules like mandatory in-office workweeks, which could lead to "voluntary terminations" among federal employees. Their ultimate goal is to "eliminate the need" for DOGE's existence by July 4th, 2026.
