Motorola has officially kicked off the "hot foldable summer" with the introduction of its new Razr Ultra, a premium smartphone that comes with a unique wood back panel, AI-powered features, and a hefty price tag of $1,299. The Ultra is part of a trio of new Razr models, including the standard Razr and Razr Plus, which offer refreshed designs, improved performance, and quality-of-life upgrades.
The Razr Ultra stands out with its distinctive wood back panel, a feature that's sure to turn heads. The phone also boasts a range of high-end specifications, including a Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage, and support for 30W wireless charging and 68W wired charging. The Ultra's 7-inch inner screen is slightly larger than its siblings and gets brighter, reaching up to 4,500 nits.
In terms of cameras, the Razr Ultra features a trio of 50-megapixel sensors, including a main camera with larger 2.0μm binned "quad pixels" for improved image quality. The phone also gets a dedicated AI button, which provides quick access to Motorola's new AI features, including "Remember this," a feature that allows users to save and recall important information, and "Catch me up," which summarizes recent notifications.
The Razr Ultra's design is not the only unique aspect of the phone. It also features an updated hinge made from titanium, which is four times stronger than the previous design and reduces the inner screen crease when the phone is flipped open. All three Razr models come with an IP48 rating, making them fully water-resistant, although dust remains a concern.
In addition to the Ultra, Motorola has also refreshed its standard Razr and Razr Plus models. The Razr Plus still uses a Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 chipset, while the Razr gets a bump up to a Dimensity 7400X chipset. Both phones retain their previous price points, with the Razr starting at $699 and the Razr Plus at $999. The Ultra, on the other hand, is priced at a premium, rivaling Samsung's Galaxy Ultra series.
The new Razr models will be available for preorder in the US on May 7th and go on sale on May 15th. With their unique designs, improved performance, and AI-powered features, they're sure to generate interest among consumers looking for a premium foldable smartphone experience.
It remains to be seen, however, whether the Ultra's hefty price tag will deter buyers. At $1,299, it's a significant investment, even for a high-end smartphone. Nevertheless, Motorola's commitment to innovation and design is clear, and the Razr Ultra is sure to be a conversation starter in the world of tech.
