Microsoft has officially rolled out its new in-game browser overlay, Microsoft Edge Game Assist, on Windows 11, following months of beta testing. This feature is designed to provide gamers with a seamless browsing experience while playing their favorite games, similar to Valve's Steam overlay browser.
The Game Assist feature appears in the Game Bar on Windows 11, which can be accessed by pressing the Windows key + G. This widget is game-aware, meaning it can detect the games users are playing and offer relevant tips and guides in a side panel. To enable the in-game browser, users can open Microsoft Edge, go to Settings and more > Settings, search for Game Assist, and install the widget.
According to William Devereux, senior product manager for Microsoft Edge, the initial preview of Game Assist offers contextual tips and guides for a selection of popular PC games. Microsoft has already added support for several popular titles, including Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Marvel Rivals, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Devereux noted that the company will continue to add tips and guides for more popular games throughout the preview and over time.
One of the key benefits of Game Assist is its ability to use the same cookies, autofill, and favorites data from the main Microsoft Edge browser. This means users can access their favorite guides or websites while playing any game, without having to exit the game or switch between applications. Additionally, Microsoft has added support for extensions like ad blockers to this feature, with plans to introduce support for keyboard shortcuts, an improved picture-in-picture experience, and the ability to add a tab from Microsoft Edge to the sidebar in the future.
The introduction of Game Assist marks a significant step forward for Microsoft in the gaming space, as it seeks to enhance the overall gaming experience for Windows 11 users. By providing gamers with a convenient and contextual browsing experience, Microsoft aims to increase user engagement and loyalty to its Edge browser and Windows 11 operating system.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft's Game Assist feature is received by gamers and how it compares to similar offerings from competitors like Valve's Steam. With its robust feature set and seamless integration with the Game Bar, Game Assist has the potential to become a go-to tool for PC gamers on Windows 11.
