Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Windows Search for Windows 11 Insiders

Microsoft has taken a significant step forward in revolutionizing the Windows search experience, introducing an AI-powered search feature for Windows 11 Insiders in the dev channel. This innovative tool, announced in October, leverages semantic indexing to enable users to search for local files using more casual language, similar to how they would interact with a virtual assistant.

The AI-powered search feature is accessible through search boxes in Settings, File Explorer, or the taskbar, and doesn't require an internet connection to function, thanks to the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) chips on Copilot Plus computers. Initially, the feature is limited to searching Windows settings and files with image and text formats, including JPEG, PNG, PDF, TXT, and XLS.

Microsoft has emphasized that search results are restricted to files located in areas chosen by the user for indexing. Users can customize these locations using options found under Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, or opt for the "Enhanced" setting to index their entire machine. The company has also hinted that the feature will eventually expand to include cloud data, such as that stored in OneDrive.

The AI-powered Windows search will be gradually rolled out to Windows Insiders on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for Intel or AMD Copilot Plus computers to follow. The feature will be compatible with machines set to Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish languages.

In addition to the new search feature, the latest build also includes AI writing tools offered by Click to Do. This feature allows users to choose from context-sensitive menus of options when holding the Windows key down and left-clicking on their screen. A new "Refine" option has been added, enabling users to correct grammar with a single click.

This development marks a significant milestone in Microsoft's efforts to integrate AI capabilities into its operating system. The company's focus on enhancing the search experience is likely to improve user productivity and overall satisfaction with the Windows platform. As the feature becomes more widely available, it will be interesting to observe its impact on the way users interact with their devices.

With the AI-powered search feature, Microsoft is poised to set a new standard for search functionality in operating systems. As the technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative applications of AI in the Windows ecosystem.
