Microsoft Discontinues Surface Studio 2 Plus, No Successor in Sight

Microsoft has officially discontinued the production of its Surface Studio 2 Plus, a unique all-in-one PC that was introduced two years ago. The company confirmed to Windows Central that it will no longer manufacture the device, and once existing stock is depleted, it will not be available for new purchases.

The Surface Studio 2 Plus was a niche product that targeted creatives, offering a 28-inch touchscreen display with a unique hinge that allowed it to transform into a giant tablet for drawing purposes. Although it was an expensive and specialized device, it was considered the ultimate all-in-one Windows PC. Its discontinuation marks another area of Microsoft's Surface business that the company is exiting, following the Surface Duo and Surface Earbuds.

The original Surface Studio was launched as a surprise addition to Microsoft's Surface lineup, aiming to make desktop PCs exciting again. It was positioned as a competitor to Apple's stronghold on the creative market. Despite its innovative design and features, the Surface Studio never gained widespread adoption, likely due to its high price point and limited appeal.

Microsoft has been shifting its focus towards other areas of its Surface business, particularly its Copilot Plus range of devices. The company recently launched the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7, as well as business-focused versions of the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6. Additionally, Lunar Lake variants of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 are expected to arrive in 2025.

The discontinuation of the Surface Studio 2 Plus has sparked hope among fans that Microsoft might one day release a standalone folding and transforming screen, allowing users to turn any laptop or PC into a Surface Studio-like device. While there is no indication of such a product in development, it remains a possibility that could revitalize interest in the Surface Studio concept.

The exit from the Surface Studio business marks a significant shift in Microsoft's strategy, as the company continues to adapt to changing market trends and customer preferences. As the PC hardware landscape evolves, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft's Surface lineup evolves to meet the demands of its customers.
