Meta's $1,000 Smart Glasses, Codenamed Hypernova, to Launch by Year-End

Meta is reportedly gearing up to launch its high-end smart glasses, codenamed Hypernova, by the end of 2025. According to Bloomberg, the new device will feature a built-in screen, improved camera, and advanced hand gesture controls, all packed into a sleek design. The Hypernova is expected to come with a hefty price tag, ranging from $1,000 to $1,400, significantly higher than the current Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, which start at $299.

The Hypernova's screen will be visible only on the right lens, at the lower-right quadrant, and is best viewed when looking downward. When turned on, the device will display a home screen with icons horizontally, similar to the Meta Quest. The glasses will also feature an AI chatbot, building upon the concept of having a virtual assistant on your face. This advanced technology is likely to justify the higher price point, setting the Hypernova apart from other mid-tier smart glasses available in the market.

Notably, Meta is reserving its advanced augmented reality (AR) technology for its still-in-development Orion glasses. The Hypernova, on the other hand, will target the mid-tier smart glasses segment, which has seen significant growth in recent years. The device's high price point will likely be attributed to the inclusion of the Orion's "neural" wristband controller, codenamed Ceres.

Interestingly, Bloomberg reports that Meta is already working on a next-generation version of the Hypernova, codenamed Hypernova 2, which will feature two screens. The company plans to launch Hypernova 2 in 2027, further solidifying its position in the wearables market.

The launch of the Hypernova marks a significant milestone for Meta, as it continues to expand its presence in the wearables segment. With its advanced features and sleek design, the Hypernova is likely to appeal to early adopters and tech enthusiasts. However, the high price point may limit its mass market appeal, at least initially. As the wearables market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how the Hypernova fares against other competitors in the space.

In conclusion, the Hypernova represents a significant step forward for Meta in the wearables space. With its advanced features, sleek design, and high price point, the device is likely to generate significant interest among tech enthusiasts and early adopters. As the market continues to evolve, it will be important to monitor the Hypernova's performance and its impact on the wearables segment as a whole.
