Nintendo has finally shared details about its highly anticipated Mario Kart game for the Switch 2, and it's a doozy. Dubbed Mario Kart World, the game will be a day-one exclusive for the new console, offering an open-world racing experience like never before. The announcement was made during the latest Nintendo Direct event, which provided a glimpse into the game's exciting features.
Mario Kart World's open-world mode, called "Free Roam," allows players to drive on and off-road around the world, take scenic drives with friends, and even take photos together at different locations. This mode is reminiscent of Forza Horizon 5, and it's clear that Nintendo is taking inspiration from other successful open-world racing games. Additionally, the game will feature a "Knock-out Tour" mode, which enables players to participate in a cross-country Cannonball Run-style checkpoint race.
The game also introduces new gameplay mechanics, such as the ability to grind on rails and power lines, as well as wall jump. Players will have access to new vehicles, including boats and snowmobiles, which will add a fresh layer of excitement to the racing experience. The trailer also showed off on-the-fly character customization, allowing players to personalize their characters like never before. The game will feature a range of characters, including familiar faces like Mario and Wario, as well as newcomers like the cow from Moo Moo Meadows in Mario Kart 64.
The Mario Kart series has become Nintendo's most popular franchise, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe being the bestselling Switch game to date. Its predecessor holds the same title for the Wii U, and the series has consistently performed well across various Nintendo platforms. It's no surprise, then, that Nintendo has chosen Mario Kart World as a debut title for the Switch 2, which is set to launch on June 5th.
The Switch 2 itself has been generating significant buzz, with its 1080p 120Hz display, 4K dock, mouse mode, and other impressive specs. The console's initial lineup of games, including Mario Kart World, is expected to be a major draw for gamers. With its open-world racing experience and new gameplay mechanics, Mario Kart World is shaping up to be a must-play title for fans of the series and the Switch 2.
More information about Mario Kart World will be shared during a Nintendo Direct event scheduled for April 17th at 6AM PT / 9AM ET. In the meantime, gamers can look forward to getting their hands on the game when the Switch 2 launches in June.
