Lovable Raises $16M to Democratize Software Development with AI

Swedish AI startup Lovable has raised $16 million in a pre-Series A funding round led by Creandum, marking a significant milestone in its mission to democratize software development. The platform, which allows anyone to create production-ready software without needing coding knowledge, has seen impressive growth figures since its launch.

Lovable's innovative approach has resonated with users, with over 500,000 users building more than 25,000 new products daily. The platform's GPT Engineer can ship fully functional web apps, making it an attractive solution for individuals and businesses alike. As a European alternative to U.S.-based AI coding tools, Lovable has established itself as a leader in the industry, with $17 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) and 30,000 paying customers.

The startup's founder, Anton Osika, credits Lovable's success to its unique approach, which combines OpenAI, Google Gemini, and Anthropic to generate software. "We've seen hundreds of commercial apps built on the platform, at least 25,000," Osika said in an interview with TechCrunch. This achievement is all the more impressive considering Lovable has only spent $2 million in capital expenditure, making it one of the fastest-growing startups in Europe.

Osika's vision for Lovable was born out of his experience working on Depict.ai, a YC-backed company that applies machine learning in e-commerce. He saw an opportunity to give the 99% of the population who don't know how to code access to software development through AI. With Lovable, Osika aims to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical individuals, enabling anyone to create software.

The funding round, which also included angel investors such as Charlie Songhurst (Meta board), Adam D'Angelo, and Thomas Wolf (Hugging Face), will be used to expand Lovable's integration with third-party services, including Supabase for databases and GitHub for code storage. This move is expected to further enhance the platform's capabilities and user experience.

Fredrik Cassel, general partner at Creandum, expressed his enthusiasm for Lovable's potential, stating, "I haven't seen this level of user love for a product since we invested in Spotify. It's truly astounding. Lovable has the potential to become one of Europe's next generational companies in this new era of AI."

As the AI-powered software development landscape continues to evolve, Lovable's success serves as a testament to the growing demand for accessible and user-friendly solutions. With its latest funding round, Lovable is poised to further disrupt the industry and empower individuals and businesses to create software without the need for extensive coding knowledge.

As the startup looks to the future, its impact on the tech industry is likely to be significant. With its innovative approach and impressive growth figures, Lovable is well-positioned to become a leader in the AI-powered software development space, democratizing access to software creation for millions of people around the world.
