LiveKit, an open-source software package for building real-time audio and video streaming applications, has raised $45 million in a Series B funding round led by Altimeter, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Hanabi Capital. This investment brings the company's total funding to date to an undisclosed amount, and marks a significant milestone in its mission to simplify the process of delivering high-bandwidth, multimodal data to users without interruptions.
The brainchild of Russ d'Sa and David Zhao, LiveKit was launched in 2021 as an open-source project, but soon gained traction and showed business potential. Today, the platform boasts over 500 paying customers and more than 100,000 developers across its cloud platform and open-source products. Notable users include tech giants Spotify, Meta, and Microsoft, as well as Character AI, Speak, and Fanatics.
LiveKit's success can be attributed to its ability to provide a seamless and scalable solution for real-time communication, which is increasingly critical in various industries. For instance, the platform is used by large aerospace companies for launch and flight observation, Skydio for police drones teleoperation, and teams at Oracle and Adobe in various government applications. Moreover, it is the backbone for roughly 25% of 911 emergency calls in the U.S., demonstrating its reliability and trustworthiness in high-stakes situations.
The company's current focus is on expanding its engineering and product teams, which currently consist of around 50 people, and developing its core infrastructure. LiveKit is also working on an "elastic agent compute service," a product that can deploy and automatically scale up or down voice "agents" like chatbots. According to d'Sa, this technology has the potential to revolutionize the way companies interact with their customers, and ultimately, LiveKit is building an "AI-native cloud provider" that can rival the likes of Stripe in the payments space.
In terms of financial performance, LiveKit's run rate exceeded $10 million last year, indicating a strong growth trajectory. The latest funding round will likely accelerate this growth, enabling the company to further invest in its technology and expand its customer base. With its sights set on becoming a leading player in the real-time communication space, LiveKit is poised to make a significant impact on the industry in the years to come.
As the demand for seamless and high-quality real-time communication continues to grow, LiveKit's innovative approach and scalable solution position it well to capitalize on this trend. With its latest funding round, the company is well-equipped to drive innovation and expansion, ultimately transforming the way businesses and individuals interact with each other.
