German camera manufacturer Leica has announced the Lux Grip, a new iPhone accessory designed to provide a more DSLR-like shooting experience for mobile photographers. The Lux Grip is a premium camera grip that attaches to iPhones using MagSafe and features customizable function buttons, a two-stage shutter button, and a control dial. It's available now for $329 in select Leica stores, the company's online store, and other specialist retailers.
The Lux Grip is made with an aluminum housing finished in black, but without the iconic Leica red dot. It wirelessly connects to iPhones using Bluetooth and is designed to be used specifically with Leica's mobile photography app, which simulates the look and aesthetics of the company's lenses and vintage photography gear. The app is free, but requires a $6.99 per month or $69.99 annual subscription to use all of its features. To soften the blow of the Lux Grip's price tag, Leica includes a free one-year subscription to the app.
In terms of battery life, the Lux Grip's 300mAh battery has enough power to take up to 1,000 shots, and it can be recharged over USB-C in about two hours. However, unlike the Stage PowerGrip announced by Belkin at CES 2025, which houses a beefier 10,000mAh battery that can charge a connected phone, Leica's grip only powers itself. The Stage PowerGrip is also significantly cheaper, priced at $149.95.
Leica's pricing strategy may raise eyebrows, especially considering the company's reputation for high-end products. The Lux Grip's $329 price tag is steep compared to other grip solutions on the market, but it's worth noting that Leica is a brand known for its premium products, including $23,000 platinum-plated film cameras and $500 pencil sets.
The Lux Grip is compatible with iPhone models supporting MagSafe accessories, dating back to the iPhone 12. It can be used with the phone vertically or horizontally, making it a versatile accessory for mobile photographers. Additionally, Leica offers a $60 leather case for the Lux Grip, which includes a pocket for hiding an AirTag.
The Lux Grip's release marks Leica's continued expansion into the mobile photography market. While the price may be prohibitive for some, the Lux Grip's unique features and Leica's reputation for quality may make it an attractive option for serious mobile photographers looking to elevate their shooting experience.
