Kia has officially unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the EV4 sedan, which boasts impressive range figures and an affordable price tag. The South Korean automaker revealed the new model at its 2025 EV day event in Spain, alongside an urban-focused EV2 small electric SUV concept and the PV5 electric passenger and cargo van.
The EV4 sedan comes in two versions: a traditional 4-door car with a funky rear end and a "five-door" hot-hatch-looking version primarily designed for the European market. While it won't be Kia's most performance-oriented EV, the single-motor front-wheel drive vehicle still packs 150kW of power and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 7.4 seconds.
One of the standout features of the EV4 is its battery range. Kia claims the vehicle can cover up to 630km (approximately 391 miles) on a single charge with the larger 81.4 kWh battery option, and 430km (about 267 miles) with the smaller 58.3 kWh battery. These estimates are based on Europe's WLTP standards, which are generally more generous than those used in other regions.
In addition to its impressive range, the EV4 also features some of Kia's cutting-edge EV technology. The vehicle comes equipped with a 30-inch widescreen display, comprising three side-by-side instrument cluster and infotainment screens, which run Kia's latest "connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) software. This allows for entertainment options like YouTube, Netflix, and games, as well as an AI voice assistant, Apple Watch digital key access, V2L for powering household devices, and a "Smart Cruise Control 2" advanced driver-assistance system with lane keeping.
Kia also revealed its concept EV2, which is expected to be even more affordable than the EV4. The mini-SUV will be the company's "smallest EV yet" and will feature options to reconfigure seating to maximize front row space for lounging or for rear cargo. Other perks include removable portable speakers for tailgating.
The EV4 sedan will initially be built in Korea and will launch there in mid-March. The EV4 hatchback will be produced in Slovakia and will launch in Europe in the second half of 2024. The North American version of the sedan will be produced "later in the year." The EV2, meanwhile, is set to arrive in 2026 for Europe and other regions, although its US availability is yet to be confirmed.
Kia President Ho Sung Song announced that EV4 pricing will start at 37,000 euros (approximately $38,500), with an initial production run of 160,000 units, 80,000 of which are destined for North America. This could make the EV4 a viable option for US car buyers looking for an affordable mass-market electric car, potentially filling a gap left by automakers like Volkswagen, which is no longer bringing the ID.7 stateside.
The launch of the EV4 sedan and hatchback marks a significant step forward for Kia in the electric vehicle market, as the company aims to provide a more affordable and accessible option for consumers. With its impressive range and feature set, the EV4 could be a game-changer in the EV landscape.
