In a move that could disrupt the traditional crowdfunding landscape, Kenyan startup OneKitty has launched a platform that integrates with WhatsApp, allowing users to track contributions and fundraising campaigns in real-time. The innovative approach has already facilitated over 10,000 fundraising campaigns for more than 200,000 Kenyans.
The idea for OneKitty was born out of frustration with traditional crowdfunding methods, which often rely on manual tracking and updates. Danche Nganga, the 23-year-old founder, was inspired to create a solution after discussing the challenges of communal fundraising with his partner. He teamed up with Shem Maina, a finance expert, to develop the platform, which uses a chatbot to provide real-time updates to users.
The integration with WhatsApp is a key differentiator for OneKitty, as it allows users to track contributions and fundraising campaigns on a platform they already use frequently. According to Statista, the number of WhatsApp users in Kenya is expected to reach 15.31 million by 2027, making it an ideal platform for crowdfunding.
OneKitty's co-founders claim that their platform is more affordable than traditional crowdfunding options, with a fee of 2.5% of total contributions upon withdrawals. In contrast, GoFundMe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per donation, and M-Changa charges a standard platform fee of 4.25% of the total funds raised.
The startup has already facilitated a range of fundraising campaigns, from community projects to emergency relief efforts. In one notable example, the platform was used to raise Ksh 200,000 (~ $1,500) to purchase food and household goods for residents of Mathare Slum in Nairobi following a devastating flood.
OneKitty's success has not gone unnoticed, with fintech expert Vincent Kimosop praising the platform's ability to connect with users in a relatable way. "It's important to have a product that trickles down to the people in a way that they can be able to relate," Kimosop said.
The startup plans to expand its services to Tanzania and is considering seeking investments to fund further growth. In the meantime, OneKitty's innovative approach to crowdfunding is set to revolutionize the way Kenyans raise funds for community projects and personal causes.
As the startup continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how it competes with traditional crowdfunding platforms and adapts to the evolving needs of its users. For now, OneKitty's WhatsApp integration has set a new standard for transparency and convenience in crowdfunding.
