Jeff Bezos, the founder of Blue Origin, has announced that pop star Katy Perry will be joining the company's next crewed mission to space. Perry will be accompanied by CBS host Gayle King and Bezos' fiancé Lauren Sánchez, among others, on the New Shepard rocket's 11th human flight this spring.
The all-female crew will also include research scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe. This mission marks a significant milestone for Blue Origin, which has been actively pursuing its goal of making space travel accessible to humans.
Lauren Sánchez first revealed her plans to lead an all-female Blue Origin mission in 2023, but she didn't disclose the names of her fellow crew members at the time. This announcement comes on the heels of Blue Origin's most recent human spaceflight, which took place earlier this week and saw a six-person crew reach the edge of space and experience zero gravity for a few minutes before returning to Earth.
Since 2021, Blue Origin has taken 52 people to space aboard its New Shepard rocket, including notable figures like Star Trek's William Shatner and Bezos himself. This mission highlights the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of space exploration and making it more inclusive and diverse.
The inclusion of Katy Perry, a global pop sensation, is likely to generate significant buzz and attention around space travel. Her participation may also help to inspire a new generation of young people, particularly women, to pursue careers in STEM fields and space exploration.
As private space companies like Blue Origin continue to advance their capabilities and push the limits of space travel, we can expect to see more innovative and inclusive initiatives in the future. This mission, in particular, marks an exciting step forward for the industry and sets the stage for further exploration and discovery.
With Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket proving its reliability and safety, the company is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of space travel and exploration. As we look to the stars, it's clear that the possibilities are endless, and this mission is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the history of space exploration.
