For the first time since 2018, Japan's King Jim is bringing its popular Pomera D250 digital typewriter to the US market. The device, which launched in Japan in 2022, is designed to provide a distraction-free writing experience, devoid of email, social media, and web browsing capabilities. Instead, it focuses solely on writing, making it an attractive option for those seeking to boost their productivity.
The Pomera D250US, specifically designed for the US market, features a keyboard with a US layout and an English language dictionary for spell checking. This updated version is available for preorder through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, which has already surpassed its modest $10,000 funding goal. Early backers can secure a unit for $374, while the full retail price will be around $499, with shipping expected to begin as early as March 2025.
In comparison to other distraction-minimizing devices, the Pomera D250US is priced higher than the $349 Freewrite Alpha. However, it offers a unique set of features, including a 10.3-inch wide clamshell design with a seven-inch 1024 x 600 black-and-white LCD display. This display is an upgrade from the E Ink screen found in the previous Pomera device, the DM30, and is designed to provide faster refresh rates and reduced ghosting.
In terms of performance, the Pomera D250US boasts an impressive battery life of up to 20 hours, allowing users to work for extended periods without interruption. The device also features a scissor-switch keyboard, which provides a tactile and responsive typing experience. Although the built-in storage is limited to 1.3GB, users can expand it with SD cards up to 32GB in size.
Transferring documents from the Pomera D250US to a PC or mobile device is also convenient, with options including USB-C, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity via the Pomera Link mobile app available for iOS and Android. In the absence of a wireless network, users can even convert documents to a series of QR codes (up to 999 in succession) and transfer them to their mobile app using their smartphone's camera.
The Pomera D250US is an attractive option for writers, students, and professionals seeking a distraction-free writing experience. With its unique features, enhanced performance, and competitive pricing, it is likely to appeal to those looking to boost their productivity and focus on their writing tasks.
The launch of the Pomera D250US in the US market marks a significant milestone for King Jim, as it expands its presence in the global digital writing device market. As the demand for distraction-free writing tools continues to grow, the Pomera D250US is well-positioned to capitalize on this trend and provide users with a unique and effective writing experience.
