James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has outlined his vision for the studio's future, emphasizing the importance of diversity in storytelling. In a recent interview, Gunn expressed his desire to create a cinematic universe that can accommodate a wide range of genres and tones, from family-friendly fare to more violent and risqué projects.
Gunn's vision is exemplified in the upcoming HBO series, Creature Commandos, an animated show that features a team of monster mercenaries led by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). The show's offbeat characters and TV-MA rating are a deliberate departure from traditional DC fare, and Gunn sees it as a "soft intro" to the studio's new cinematic universe.
In contrast to the old DCEU, which struggled to introduce its more fantastical heroes and villains in an organic way, Gunn believes that animation provides a cost-effective means of exploring these characters. "It basically costs as much to create a battlefield as it does to create a kitchen," he noted, highlighting the creative freedom that animation affords.
Gunn's goal is to create a studio that can tell stories across different genres and tones, without being limited to family-friendly fare. "We can make something that's for general audiences, like Superman," he said. "We can make something that's violent and sexual, like [Creature Commandos]... It's about creating a world in which we can tell the story about, you know, one type of character in different genres."
This approach is not new to the comic book universe, with Marvel having attempted to explore different genres and tones in recent years. However, Gunn's commitment to this vision is a significant departure from the traditional superhero fare that has dominated the DC cinematic universe.
With Creature Commandos premiering tonight on Max, audiences will get their first glimpse into Gunn's vision for DC Studios. The show's success will be a crucial test of the studio's ability to balance its creative ambitions with commercial appeal.
As the DC cinematic universe continues to evolve, Gunn's vision for a diverse range of stories and genres has the potential to reinvigorate the franchise and attract new audiences. With Creature Commandos leading the charge, it will be interesting to see how DC Studios navigates this new creative landscape.
