Instagram is set to revolutionize its video editing capabilities with the introduction of AI-powered tools in 2025. The feature, which utilizes Meta's Movie Gen AI model, will allow users to "change nearly any aspect of your videos" with a simple text prompt, according to a teaser posted by Instagram head Adam Mosseri.
The announcement video showcases the impressive capabilities of the AI model, demonstrating how it can change Mosseri's outfit, background environments, and even his overall appearance. The tool can also add new objects to the existing background or make subtle changes, such as adding a gold chain around Mosseri's neck without altering the rest of his clothing. The inserted backgrounds and clothing appear natural, even when Mosseri rapidly moves his arms or face, suggesting a high level of sophistication in the AI model.
While the preview is impressive, it's worth noting that similar models from competitors like OpenAI's Sora video model have also looked polished in early previews, only to fall short of expectations when made available to the public. As such, it remains to be seen how well Instagram's AI video tools will perform in practice.
Meta unveiled its Movie Gen AI video generator in October, which promises to "preserve human identity and motion" in the videos it creates or edits. The announcement came months after similar models from competitors like OpenAI's Sora and Adobe's Firefly Video model, the latter of which is already powering beta text-to-video editing tools inside Premiere Pro. Meta hasn't announced when Movie Gen will be available, but Instagram is the first platform confirmed to utilize the text-to-video model.
The introduction of AI-powered video editing tools on Instagram has significant implications for creators on the platform. With the ability to make complex changes to their videos with a simple text prompt, users will have more tools at their disposal to bring their ideas to life without extensive video editing or manipulation skills. This could lead to a proliferation of high-quality, engaging content on the platform, and potentially even change the way users interact with video content.
As the technology continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Instagram's AI video tools are received by users and how they impact the platform's overall ecosystem. With the feature set to arrive next year, creators and users alike will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to experiment with these innovative tools.
