Instagram Threads, Meta's alternative to Elon Musk's X, has announced a significant update to its search interface, allowing users to filter searches by user profiles and date ranges. This move comes as the company aims to stay competitive in the social networking space, particularly with the rapid growth of Bluesky, another X alternative.
Before this update, Threads' search functionality was relatively basic, only allowing users to search by keywords and filter results by either "Top" for most engagement or "Recent" for latest posts. The new feature brings Threads' search more in line with Bluesky's, which also allows users to filter searches by user profiles, date ranges, and more using advanced queries. However, it's worth noting that Bluesky's app doesn't currently surface all filtering options in its user interface.
In contrast, X's advanced search feature is still more comprehensive, allowing users to narrow queries by language, keywords, exact phrases, excluded words, hashtags, and more. Despite this, the update to Threads' search interface is a significant step forward in making it easier for users to locate specific posts.
The new search functionality will be rolled out to global users in the coming weeks, according to the Threads account. This update is part of Meta's efforts to combat the growing threat from Bluesky, which has seen its user base soar to nearly 24 million in recent weeks. Bluesky's growth can be attributed to users leaving X over concerns about Elon Musk's political leanings and policy changes, such as plans to alter how blocks work and allow AI companies to train on X user data.
In response to Bluesky's rapid adoption, Meta's Threads has been releasing new features at a rapid pace. Recent updates include the ability for users to choose their own default feed, a design change that makes it easier to move between feeds, and an updated algorithm. Additionally, Threads is developing its own take on Bluesky's user-curated recommendation lists, called Starter Packs.
The battle for dominance in the social networking space is heating up, with Meta, X, and Bluesky all vying for user attention. As the landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how each platform adapts to changing user needs and preferences. One thing is certain – the competition is driving innovation, and users are set to benefit from the resulting improvements.
With the updated search interface, Threads is taking a significant step towards becoming a more robust and user-friendly platform. As the platform continues to evolve, it will be important to watch how users respond to these changes and whether they will be enough to stem the tide of users flocking to Bluesky.
