Nintendo Switch 2 users looking for a more affordable camera option can now rejoice, as Hori has unveiled a new GameChat camera that's small enough to be connected to the console's top USB-C port in handheld mode. The camera, which weighs just 30 grams and stands at under two inches tall, is priced at around $28, significantly cheaper than Nintendo's own $50 camera.
The new camera, listed on Amazon Japan, is expected to be released on June 5th, 2025, although it's unclear if it will be exclusive to Japan. Given that Hori's Piranha Plant camera is already available on the company's US website, it's likely that this new camera will also see wider availability.
In addition to its portability, the GameChat camera can also be used standalone, sitting on a TV, or attached to an included weighted base. The base features a fold-down support on the underside, allowing users to sit the camera on the top edge of a TV. This flexibility makes it a more functional alternative to Nintendo's camera, which is designed to stand alone on an entertainment center.
However, the camera's resolution is limited to 640x480, a significant step down from Nintendo's 1080p capabilities. This may result in a reduction in video quality when using GameChat, particularly when the camera is zooming in from across the room. Nevertheless, the camera's portability and affordability make it an attractive option for Switch 2 users.
It's worth noting that Nintendo has stated that "any compatible USB-C camera you'd like" will work with the Switch 2, although the company warns that "not all cameras may work as intended." To ensure compatibility, Nintendo has included a testing tool in the Switch 2's settings. Hori's cameras, as officially licensed Nintendo accessories, are guaranteed to work seamlessly with the console.
The release of Hori's new camera comes at a time when Switch 2 users are eagerly awaiting more affordable accessories. With the console's popularity continuing to grow, it's likely that we'll see more third-party manufacturers offering alternative solutions to Nintendo's official accessories.
In the meantime, Switch 2 users can look forward to a more affordable and portable camera option that's designed specifically for handheld mode. Whether or not Hori's new camera will become a top seller remains to be seen, but its competitive pricing and functionality make it an attractive option for gamers on the go.
