Hertz, the car rental giant, has been quietly contacting customers who are currently renting electric vehicles (EVs) to offer them a unique opportunity: the chance to buy the car instead of returning it. According to reports from The Verge, the offers are surprisingly attractive, with some renters sharing their experiences on Reddit.
One renter, for instance, was offered a 2023 Chevy Bolt for $18,442, while another was presented with a 2023 Tesla Model 3 with only 30,000 miles on it for $17,913. A third renter received an offer to purchase a Polestar 2 for $28,500. What's more, Hertz is throwing in a limited 12-month, 12,000-mile powertrain warranty, as well as a buy-back offer within seven days.
This unexpected move comes nearly a year after Hertz announced its plans to sell off a third of its EV fleet, citing lower demand and higher-than-expected repair costs. The company's decision to offload its fleet of EVs, which is comprised mostly of Teslas, is likely driven by the need to mitigate significant financial losses.
In the third quarter, Hertz recorded a staggering $937 million in vehicle depreciation, a substantial increase compared to the same period last year. The depreciation per unit reached $537, a figure the company expects to normalize to under $300 by the end of 2025. This accelerated sell-off of relatively new EVs is likely a key contributor to these losses.
Industry experts may view this move as a sign of the challenges faced by companies investing heavily in electric vehicles. As the demand for EVs remains uncertain, companies like Hertz are forced to adapt and find creative solutions to minimize their losses. By offering renters the opportunity to purchase their EVs at discounted prices, Hertz may be able to recoup some of its investment and pave the way for a more sustainable future in the electric vehicle market.
As the electric vehicle landscape continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how companies like Hertz navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with this emerging technology. One thing is certain, however: the shift towards electric vehicles is underway, and companies that adapt quickly will be best positioned to thrive in this new era.
