Growl Unveils Interactive Boxing Trainer with Projectors and Sensors

Growl, a startup in the fitness technology space, has announced the launch of its interactive boxing trainer, a wall-mounted device that combines projectors, sensors, and AI analysis to provide users with a life-size virtual coach and immersive training experience. The device, set to be upgraded in 2025, allows users to physically interact with the screen, which doubles as a punching bag, and receive real-time performance feedback.

The Growl trainer is designed to provide a more engaging and effective workout experience compared to traditional punching bags or smart home workout machines. By using projectors instead of LCD or OLED screens, the device creates a larger and more immersive display without adding extra size. The compact design, described as "compact as a wall shelf," makes it easy to install and use in any home or gym.

The device's main screen, which is essentially half a punching bag, displays a life-size virtual trainer that guides users through various exercises and provides feedback on their form and technique. The screen is equipped with infrared time-of-flight sensors that detect when and where users have punched it, turning the flexible surface into a large touchscreen. Multiple cameras track users' movements in 3D and provide real-time feedback using AI analysis.

In addition to sparring with the virtual trainer, users can play interactive fitness games, including a title that resembles the boxing equivalent of Beat Saber. The device tracks users' progress and provides metrics on their workout, including calories burned and time spent exercising. However, what sets it apart from other fitness devices is its ability to suggest improvements to users' form and technique without requiring them to step into a ring and risk getting punched back.

The Growl trainer is priced at $150 per month for unlimited family access on a 48-month plan or $190 per month for 36 months when preorders open in April 2025. While the price tag may seem steep, with a total cost of $7,200 for four years or $6,840 for three, users will own the device at the end of the subscription period. This pricing model is similar to that of Peloton's Tread Plus, which costs $7,407 over four years, including monthly subscription fees.

The launch of the Growl trainer marks a significant innovation in the fitness technology space, providing users with a unique and engaging way to improve their boxing skills and overall fitness. With its immersive display, real-time feedback, and interactive games, the device has the potential to revolutionize the way people work out and stay active.

As the fitness industry continues to evolve and incorporate new technologies, devices like the Growl trainer are likely to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of exercise and wellness. With its focus on interactivity, immersion, and personalized feedback, the Growl trainer is poised to make a significant impact in the market and change the way people approach fitness training.
