Green ammonia startup Amogy has raised $11.2 million in a new funding round, according to a recent SEC filing. The company is targeting a total of $90 million in this round, significantly smaller than its previous $139 million Series B-1 round announced in March 2023. This shift highlights the challenges middle-stage climate startups face in attracting investment in today's market.

Amogy did not immediately respond to questions about the funding round, leaving details of the investment sparse. Earlier this year, Amogy successfully tested its ammonia-to-power technology in a retrofitted tugboat, following previous tests in semi-tractors and farm tractors.

Ammonia can be burned inside traditional internal combustion engines with minor modifications, eliminating most carbon emissions when paired with a pilot fuel like diesel or biofuel. Amogy takes a distinct approach, cracking the ammonia fuel into nitrogen and hydrogen. The nitrogen is emitted as harmless nitrogen gas, while the hydrogen runs through a fuel cell, producing electricity and water. This setup eliminates the need for a pilot fuel, making it a zero-carbon solution from the start.

Despite not repurposing existing internal combustion engines in trucks and ships, Amogy is likely to find receptive customers, particularly within maritime shipping. The industry has set a deadline of 2050 to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, making innovative solutions like Amogy's increasingly attractive.
