Google has announced the rollout of its latest AI video generator, Veo 2, to Gemini Advanced subscribers. This cutting-edge technology enables users to create high-resolution videos with "cinematic realism" using a simple text prompt. Starting today, subscribers can access Veo 2 through the Gemini model dropdown on the web and mobile, allowing them to generate eight-second videos in 720p resolution.
Veo 2 boasts significant upgrades compared to its predecessor, with a "better understanding of real-world physics and human motion." This enables the AI model to deliver "fluid character movement, lifelike scenes, and finer visual details across diverse subjects and styles." The generated videos feature SynthID digital watermarks, indicating that they've been created with AI.
The AI video generator is not without limitations, however. Subscribers will be restricted to a certain number of video creations per month, with Google notifying users when they approach the limit. Additionally, videos are output in MP4 format, but mobile users have the option to upload them directly to TikTok and YouTube using the "share" button.
To demonstrate Veo 2's capabilities, Google provided examples of generated videos using prompts such as "a low-angle shot of a pampered French bulldog wearing sunglasses, lounges on a plush daybed by a sparkling turquoise pool at a luxury resort, with palm trees swaying gently in the background, captured on a bright, sunny day." The resulting video showcases the AI model's ability to create visually stunning and realistic scenes.
In addition to Veo 2, Google is also making Whisk Animate available to Google One AI Premium subscribers. This tool allows users to transform an image into an eight-second video using Veo 2. Whisk Animate builds upon Google's existing Whisk tool, which enables users to create AI-generated mashups of images. The tool is available globally through Google Labs.
Veo 2 was initially launched in early access in December, with the tool costing 50 cents per second of video in Google's Vertex AI platform. Since then, YouTube has integrated Veo 2 into its experimental Dream Screen feature, which allows users to create AI-generated video clips for Shorts.
The rollout of Veo 2 to Gemini Advanced subscribers marks a significant milestone in the development of AI video generation technology. As AI-generated content becomes increasingly prevalent, it will be interesting to see how creators and users alike leverage this technology to push the boundaries of storytelling and visual expression.
In the broader context, the advancement of AI video generation technology has significant implications for the entertainment, advertising, and social media industries. As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated and accessible, it may fundamentally change the way we consume and interact with video content.
