Google has taken a significant step in its fight against ad fraud, suspending a staggering 39.2 million advertiser accounts on its platform in 2024, more than triple the number from the previous year. This effort marks a significant milestone in the company's ongoing battle to ensure a safe and trustworthy advertising environment.
The search giant attributed its success to the effective deployment of large language models (LLMs) and human expertise. By leveraging LLMs, Google was able to identify and suspend a "vast majority" of ad accounts before they ever served an ad. Additionally, a team of over 100 experts from various divisions, including Ads Safety, Trust and Safety, and researchers from DeepMind, worked together to analyze deepfake ad scams and develop countermeasures.
Google's efforts were further bolstered by the introduction of technical countermeasures and over 30 ads and publisher policy updates last year. These moves led to the suspension of over 700,000 offending advertising accounts, resulting in a 90% drop in reports of deepfake ads. The company's commitment to safety enforcement is evident in its investment in LLM enhancements, with over 50 updates launched last year across all its platforms.
In terms of regional breakdown, the United States saw the highest number of account suspensions, with 39.2 million accounts suspended and 1.8 billion ads taken down. India, the second-largest internet market, followed closely, with 2.9 million account suspensions and 247.4 million ads removed. The top policy violations in India included financial services, trademark misuse, ad network abuse, personalized ads, and gambling and games.
Scam-related violations accounted for a significant portion of the suspended accounts, with 5 million accounts suspended and almost half a billion ads related to scams removed. Google's efforts to combat scams are crucial, given the potential harm they can cause to users.
In addition to its efforts to combat ad fraud, Google also verified over 8,900 new election advertisers in 2024, a year that saw half of the world's population go to the polls. The company removed 10.7 million election ads, although it noted that the volume of election ads was relatively small compared to its overall ad numbers.
Google's overall safety metrics saw significant improvements, with 5.1 billion ads blocked and 1.3 billion pages removed last year. While these numbers are still substantial, they represent a decrease from the previous year, indicating the effectiveness of the company's prevention efforts.
The company's approach to safety enforcement is not without its challenges, however. Large-scale suspensions can sometimes raise concerns about the fairness of the company's rules. To address this, Google offers an appeal process that includes human reviews to ensure that appropriate action is taken. The company has also updated its policies and transparency capabilities to provide clearer messaging and rationale to advertisers.
