Helsing, a German defense tech startup, has announced that it is scaling up production of its HX-2 strike drones to 6,000 units, in addition to the 4,000 HF-1 strike drones currently being delivered to Ukraine. This move comes as the conflict in Ukraine continues, despite recent agreements between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin negotiations to end the war.
The HX-2 strike drones are designed to be used in military operations and are capable of assembling into swarms, making them a valuable asset for Ukraine's military. Helsing's co-founder, Gundbert Scherf, stated that the company is increasing production in response to additional orders from Ukraine. This development highlights the critical role that drones, particularly first-person-view (FPV) kamikaze drones, have played in helping Ukraine offset its numerical and equipment disadvantages against Russia.
Helsing's pivot into the defense technology space in 2024 has proven successful, with the company now claiming to be one of the largest strike drone manufacturers globally. The company's approach combines hardware and software, including its Altra platform, which connects drones and enables them to operate autonomously. According to co-founder Niklas Köhler, "We solve the hard problems in the software layer, not the electronics." This approach has allowed Helsing to develop drones that are not only capable of precision strikes but also scalable and cost-effective.
The HX-2 kamikaze drone model, unveiled in late 2024, integrates AI and has been designed to be manufacturable at scale. The use of AI in autonomous drones is crucial, as it enables them to find their targets even when communications are jammed and data signals are lost. Helsing's focus on scalability has also led to lower unit costs compared to competing options, such as the AeroVironment Switchblade.
Helsing's production strategy involves building "Resilience Factories" across Europe, which will enable the company to source from local supply chains and workforces. This approach has the advantage of being able to meet national defense procurement departments' requirements for sovereignty. The company's first Resilience Factory in Southern Germany is now operational, with an initial monthly production capacity of over 1,000 HX-2 drones. The factory can also scale manufacturing rates to tens of thousands of units in case of a conflict.
The announcement comes as Southern Germany is confirmed as a defense hub, with a report by Dealroom and the NATO Innovation Fund revealing that the country secured Europe's top spot in Defence, Resilience, and Security funding in 2024. Helsing itself played a significant role in this funding surge, having raised $487 million in Series C funding from General Catalyst and others last year. The startup has now pulled in a total of approximately $791 million in funding to date.
In a related development, Helsing unveiled a strategic partnership with French AI champion Mistral during the Paris AI Action Summit. According to Scherf, "Europe needs to assert its strength as a geopolitical actor, and AI leadership is the key to that strength and Europe's future security and prosperity." This partnership highlights the growing importance of AI in the defense technology sector and Helsing's commitment to driving innovation in this space.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, Helsing's increased production of strike drones is likely to have a significant impact on the military landscape. The company's innovative approach to defense technology, combining hardware and software, has positioned it as a leader in the industry. With its Resilience Factories and strategic partnerships, Helsing is well-placed to continue driving growth and innovation in the defense technology sector.
