Fujifilm Unveils GFX100RF: A Compact Medium Format Camera with a Fixed Lens

Fujifilm has announced its latest addition to the GFX series, the GFX100RF, a compact medium format camera that boasts a 102-megapixel sensor and a fixed 35mm lens. This new camera marks a significant departure from Fujifilm's other GFX models, which typically feature interchangeable lenses. The GFX100RF's fixed lens design and compact body make it an attractive option for photographers who want high-quality images without the bulk.

The GFX100RF's 35mm lens, equivalent to a 28mm in full frame, offers a versatile focal length suitable for a wide range of photography applications. The camera's styling and design are reminiscent of Fujifilm's X100VI, with a precision-crafted aluminum top plate that exudes a premium feel. The GFX100RF will be available in April for $4,899.95, making it a serious investment for photographers.

One of the standout features of the GFX100RF is its ability to digitally extend the focal length to 45mm, 63mm, and 80mm, allowing for greater creative flexibility. However, the lack of in-body image stabilization may be a disappointment for some users, particularly given the camera's high price point. On the other hand, the GFX100RF features a built-in four-stop ND filter, a first for the GFX series, which will undoubtedly be appreciated by photographers who frequently shoot in bright conditions.

The camera's rear features a 3.15-inch, 2.1-million dot touchscreen LCD, as well as a high-resolution 5.76-million dot electronic viewfinder (EVF). The EVF, in particular, is noteworthy for its exceptional sharpness, making it an excellent option for photographers who prefer to use the EVF over the LCD.

Fujifilm's GFX100RF is clearly positioned as a competitor to Leica's Q3, offering a unique blend of medium format image quality and compact design. While the GFX 100S II may offer more flexibility with its interchangeable lenses and in-body image stabilization, the GFX100RF's fixed lens design and compact body make it an attractive option for photographers who value portability and ease of use. As the camera becomes available, it will be interesting to see how it fares in the market and whether it can tempt photographers away from Leica's offerings.

Stay tuned for a comprehensive review of the Fujifilm GFX100RF in the near future, where we'll put this exciting new camera through its paces and explore its capabilities in greater detail.
