Framework, a modular laptop manufacturer, has announced that it will delay US preorders for its new Laptop 12 due to the impact of Trump's tariffs. The company confirmed that international buyers, including those in Canada, Europe, Australia, and Taiwan, can still place orders starting today, but US customers will have to wait.
The Laptop 12 is Framework's smallest laptop yet, featuring a 13th Gen Intel Core i3 or i5 chip, a 1920x1200 touchscreen with stylus support, and up to 48GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. The laptop is designed to be modular and repairable, and it comes in a unique pastel pink and mint finish. Although pricing has not been announced, Framework pitched the Laptop 12 as an "entry-level" model at a "lower cost" than the Laptop 13.
The delay in US preorders is a direct result of the 32 percent tariff imposed on Taiwanese-made products, where Framework manufactures its laptops. The company explained on Bluesky that it is starting its tariff response with the "most reversible" changes, delisting and delaying products, and will avoid raising prices "until we have final confirmation that there is no alternative."
This is not the first time Framework has had to adjust its sales strategy due to tariffs. The company previously "paused" sales of some cheaper Laptop 13 models in the US to avoid selling them at a loss after factoring in the new tariffs. The Laptop 13 now starts at $899 for a DIY version, or $1,099 for a prebuilt one.
The impact of Trump's tariffs on the tech industry is far-reaching, with many companies struggling to absorb the additional costs. Arduboy, a tiny Game Boy creator, recently announced that its product would not survive the tariffs, and other companies are likely to follow suit. The tariffs, which include a 104 percent duty on Chinese-made products, are expected to have a significant impact on the global supply chain.
Framework's decision to delay US preorders for the Laptop 12 highlights the challenges faced by companies that manufacture products in Taiwan and other countries subject to tariffs. As the trade war continues to escalate, it remains to be seen how companies will adapt and respond to the changing landscape.
In the meantime, international buyers can place orders for the Laptop 12 starting today at 1pm ET, with pricing to be announced at the same time. US customers will have to wait until Framework can find a way to navigate the tariffs and make the laptop available at a competitive price.
