Drata Acquires SafeBase for $250 Million to Strengthen Security Compliance Automation

Drata, a leading security compliance automation platform, has acquired SafeBase, a software security review startup, for $250 million. This strategic move aims to strengthen Drata's capabilities in helping companies adhere to frameworks such as SOC 2 and GDPR. As part of the deal, SafeBase co-founders Al Yang (CEO) and Adar Arnon (CTO) will retain their roles, and SafeBase will continue to offer a standalone product while integrating its core solutions into Drata's platform.

SafeBase, founded in 2020 by Yang and Arnon, has developed a unique solution that employs AI models specifically trained on security documentation use cases to read, interpret security information, and automatically respond to security questionnaires. The company has gained significant traction, with over 1,000 customers, including LinkedIn, Palantir, and CrowdStrike, and has raised $53.1 million in venture capital from investors such as Zoom Ventures, NEA, and Comcast Ventures.

Drata's acquisition of SafeBase comes at a time when the demand for trust management solutions is on the rise. With the increasing reliance on third-party vendors and the introduction of new regulations like the Digital Operational Resilience Act in the EU, organizations need robust security compliance solutions to ensure the integrity of their data. Drata's CEO, Adam Markowitz, envisions creating a "seamless ecosystem" of trust, governance, risk, and compliance offerings with SafeBase's technology.

Drata has been expanding rapidly, securing over $300 million in funding and acquiring over 7,000 customers, including Notion and Tenable. The company has also made strategic acquisitions, such as governance and automation firm Harmonize.io and cloud security platform Oak9, to enhance its capabilities. Despite a minor setback last year, when it laid off 40 people, Drata has continued to grow, with its revenue increasing 100% year-over-year and nearing $100 million in annual recurring revenue.

The acquisition of SafeBase marks a significant milestone for Drata, which is celebrating its fourth anniversary. With this deal, Drata is poised to further solidify its position in the security compliance automation market and provide its customers with a more comprehensive suite of solutions to manage their security posture.

In a blog post, Markowitz expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Together with SafeBase, we're more committed than ever to empowering our customers to build and scale trust, unlock growth, and achieve success." As the security landscape continues to evolve, Drata's acquisition of SafeBase is a strategic move that will have significant implications for the industry.
