Discord, the popular communication platform for gamers, has announced the launch of its Discord Social SDK, a free toolkit designed to help developers enhance their games' social and multiplayer experiences. The SDK allows developers to tap into Discord's vast social infrastructure, providing a range of features to improve in-game interactions and community engagement.
The Discord Social SDK offers several key integrations, including a unified friends list that enables players to access their Discord friends in-game and their in-game friends on Discord. This feature makes it easier for players to stay connected both in and out of the game. Additionally, the SDK provides deep-linked game invites, allowing players to invite friends to directly join their party or lobby.
In terms of communication features, the SDK offers cross-platform messaging, enabling players to converse across desktop, console, and mobile devices. Developers can also link in-game chats to specific Discord channels in their servers, as well as utilize voice chat capabilities. These features aim to facilitate seamless communication and collaboration among players.
According to Discord co-founder and CTO Stan Vishnevskiy, the Social SDK is designed to help game creators connect with the world's largest and most engaged community of players, thereby fueling the growth of their games before, during, and after launch. "Game discovery and retention have never been so critical, and we're excited to help developers grow their games by reaching gamers where they are," Vishnevskiy stated in a press release.
The Discord Social SDK is already being used by several prominent developers, including Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, 1047 Games, Scopely, Mainframe Industries, Elodie Games, Tencent Games, and others. The toolkit is compatible with C++, Unreal Engine, and Unity, and supports Windows 11+ and macOS, with console and mobile support coming soon.
Discord's massive user base, boasting over 200 million monthly active users who spend a combined 1.5+ billion hours playing games each month on PC alone, makes the Social SDK a highly attractive solution for developers seeking to enhance their games' social features. By leveraging Discord's infrastructure, developers can tap into this vast and engaged community, potentially driving growth and retention for their games.
The launch of the Discord Social SDK marks a significant step forward in the company's efforts to support game developers and foster a more connected gaming community. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the importance of social features and community engagement is likely to grow, making Discord's new toolkit a valuable resource for developers seeking to stay ahead of the curve.
