Dewey Launches TikTok Video Backup Solution Amidst Uncertainty Over App's Future

TikTok's future in the US remains uncertain, but a new solution from bookmarking backup service Dewey ensures that users can save their favorite TikTok videos and access them at any time, even if the app disappears again.

Initially launched to help users organize their Twitter bookmarks, Dewey has since expanded to include a variety of tools for backing up bookmarks and saves from other social media accounts, including Bluesky, Threads, LinkedIn, and Truth Social, as well as browser bookmarks. The company is also working on adding support for Reddit and Instagram.

The Dewey team was prompted to refocus on TikTok ahead of its Sunday shutdown, which was later extended by 75 days by President Trump. However, the app's long-term future in the US remains unclear, with possibilities ranging from a joint venture with US ownership to a complete exit from the market.

In response to this uncertainty, Dewey co-founder Tom Harari revealed that the team began working on an emergency solution for backing up TikTok bookmarks last week and continued their efforts over the weekend to launch the new product. Notably, this marks the first time Dewey has supported a video-focused social network on its service.

With the launch of the TikTok backup solution, Dewey users can now pull all their TikTok Favorites and Collections (folders for saved videos) directly into their feed, allowing them to save these videos forever – or for as long as Dewey exists. TikTok Collections will also be given their own dedicated folders in Dewey's sidebar for easy access.

The addition follows other recent expansions, including support for social apps like Threads and Truth Social, as well as features that let users filter bookmarks by date, export their data, and support for Markdown export (*.md), which enables users to connect their bookmarks to other tools, like writing app Obsidian.

Dewey offers a free service for use with one account, with paid plans starting at $7.50 per month for backing up unlimited accounts. Paid plans also offer additional features like automatic syncing, advanced search, export features, and more.

The launch of Dewey's TikTok backup solution comes at a critical time, as users and creators scramble to find alternative platforms amidst the uncertainty surrounding TikTok's future. While other apps are vying for TikTok's user base, Dewey's solution provides a unique value proposition, ensuring that users can preserve their favorite content even if the app disappears.

As the tech industry continues to grapple with the implications of TikTok's uncertain future, Dewey's innovative solution serves as a reminder of the importance of data portability and user control. With its expanding range of features and supported platforms, Dewey is poised to become a go-to solution for users seeking to safeguard their online presence.
