Dell's Popular 27-Inch 4K Monitor Gets a Boost with 120Hz Refresh Rate

Dell has announced a significant upgrade to its popular 27-inch 4K UltraSharp monitor, doubling the previous generation's 60Hz refresh rate to 120Hz. This update makes the monitor an attractive option for PC gamers who require higher frame rates and smoother gameplay, while still maintaining its appeal to working professionals who need a high-quality 4K display for their daily tasks.

The UltraSharp line has long been a favorite among professionals, offering a no-frills 4K monitor that supports Windows, macOS, and multi-monitor setups. The 27-inch model, in particular, has topped many lists for the best 4K monitor. With the addition of a 120Hz refresh rate, this monitor now caters to a broader range of users, providing a single display that's suitable for both work and play.

However, this upgrade comes at a cost. The 27-inch UltraSharp 4K monitor will now retail for $699.99, up from $639.99 for the 60Hz model. The larger 32-inch UltraSharp 4K monitor will cost $949.99, up from $919.99. Both monitors will be available for purchase globally starting February 25th, according to Dell.

Beyond the increased refresh rate, the new UltraSharp 4K models feature several other improvements. These include up to 140W power delivery via USB-C, up from 90W, and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio thanks to Dell's "enhanced IPS Black technology." This technology provides 47 percent deeper blacks compared to conventional IPS panels, resulting in improved visual comfort. A comparison showcasing the contrast ratio improvements can be seen in this YouTube video.

The new monitors also include an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness and color temperature to reduce eye fatigue. The design of the monitors remains largely unchanged, with some minor tweaks to the port selection and a new ventilation grill. The 27-inch and 32-inch 4K UltraSharp monitors share near-identical designs with their predecessors, featuring VESA DisplayHDR 600 and ports for USB-A, USB-C, Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, and DisplayPort.

This upgrade marks the first time Dell has brought a 120Hz refresh rate to its popular 27-inch 4K model. The company had previously introduced 120Hz monitors to the UltraSharp lineup in 2023 and 2024. With this update, Dell is poised to attract a wider range of customers, from professionals seeking high-quality displays for work to gamers looking for a smooth and responsive gaming experience.

The implications of this upgrade are significant, as it blurs the lines between work and play. With a single monitor capable of catering to both professional and gaming needs, users may no longer need to invest in separate displays for different tasks. This could lead to a shift in the monitor market, with manufacturers focusing on creating more versatile displays that can adapt to various use cases.

In conclusion, Dell's decision to upgrade its popular 27-inch 4K UltraSharp monitor to a 120Hz refresh rate marks a significant milestone in the evolution of display technology. As the boundaries between work and play continue to blur, it will be interesting to see how manufacturers respond to the changing needs of users.
