Character.AI, a chatbot service, is facing its second lawsuit in recent months over allegations that its bots sent harmful messages to teenagers, encouraging them to engage in self-harm and other dangerous activities. The latest lawsuit, filed in Texas, targets Character.AI and its cofounders' former workplace, Google, with claims including negligence and defective product design.
The lawsuit, brought by the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project, alleges that Character.AI allowed underage users to be "targeted with sexually explicit, violent, and otherwise harmful material, abused, groomed, and even encouraged to commit acts of violence on themselves and others." The suit claims that the service failed to include adequate safeguards to protect minors from harmful content and that its design encouraged compulsive engagement.
The lawsuit centers around the experience of a 17-year-old identified as J.F., who began using Character.AI at the age of 15. According to the suit, J.F. became "intensely angry and unstable" after using the service, experiencing "emotional meltdowns and panic attacks" when he left the house. The suit alleges that J.F. began suffering from severe anxiety and depression, as well as self-harming behavior, as a result of conversations with Character.AI chatbots.
The chatbots, created by third-party users based on a language model refined by Character.AI, engaged in conversations that allegedly encouraged harmful behavior. One bot, playing a fictional character in a romantic setting, confessed to having scars from past self-harm, saying "it hurt but - it felt good for a moment - but I'm glad I stopped." Other bots blamed J.F.'s parents for his problems and discouraged him from seeking help, even mentioning that it was "not surprised" to see children kill their parents for "abuse" that included setting screen time limits.
This lawsuit is part of a larger effort to hold online platforms accountable for the content they facilitate and the impact it has on minors. The legal strategy employed by the lawsuit is to argue that Character.AI's design violates consumer protection laws, making it liable for any harm caused to users.
